Lapsus$ has revealed a vast number of cyber attacks against prominent firms in recent months, including confirmed cyber attacks against NVIDIA, Samsung, Vodafone, well-known game developer Ubisoft, and online business platform Mercado Libre.
NVIDIA is the first technology behemoth to be effectively assaulted by Lapsus$. The Daily Telegraph first reported that NVIDIA had been hacked on February 26, and NVIDIA later confessed that it had been hacked on February 23. Lapsus$, a hacker collective, claimed credit for the attack, claiming to have 1TB of NVIDIA secret material as well as the employee’s email and password.
NVIDIA attempted to remotely encrypt data, cut off Lapsus$ intranet, and other self-rescue tactics in the event of Lapsus$ data theft, but it failed because Lapsus$ had backup. After a few days, Lapsus$ changed its mind and told its admirers, “Don’t look at NVIDIA, come in and see Samsung.” They hacked Samsung’s source code, and even Qualcomm, which aided Samsung, was caught off guard.
Clearly, in the network era, information theft and destruction via the Internet has become a new challenge to network security. On the Internet battlefield, the attack and defense of network security has become a long-running conflict. National espionage agencies, in addition to individual hackers or groups, are targets of cyber attacks. Key power departments, such as government departments and military units, as well as non-governmental units, such as important corporations, scientific research institutions, and social groups, are targets of cyber attacks.
Organizations face the enormous challenge of storing and backing up massive amounts of data in a secure, reliable, and long-term manner in the age of big data. If the company’s critical data is accidentally destroyed or leaked, it will incur enormous losses, waste the company’s hard work, and even disrupt its routine operations. Under these conditions, the importance of enterprise data protection should be emphasized.
